Holy *!$!* Health Insurance Increases!** Updated

October 22nd, 2013 at 11:16 pm

So everyone is always horrified hearing about my $250 deductible $1532/month COBRA payment that I pay for my spouse and I.

I received a package today outlining price increases effective Jan 1, 2014.

I'll be upgrading to a family plan (because we will have a baby by then), and the monthly rate will be $2,999.00/month with a $750 deductible.

That is $36,000 a year! plus my co-pays and deductible. No dental.

That is more money than I even earned at my old employer in a year.

Why is the rate doubling?! Husband says its Obamacare but has no explanation for how he is impacting this.

I am just totally frustrated and sad.

I know I'll be looking for a job with benefits prior to Jan 1, and I hope to sign up for Obamacare (but have not figured out where the website is), but this being a last resort is really no resort at all.

Do babies REALLY need healthcare? If they are born healthy? I imagine vaccines are cheaper to pay for than this monthly rate and husband and I can go without for a few months until I get a job with benefits.

** update** OK- I just called another company. A compare different company rates person. She said that there is a healthcare company called Assurance that has rates effective Jan 1 ranging $700-$1000 /month. The best package for $1000/month has dental, $0 deductible, covers name brand prescriptions. She said she is calling me in December to get me signed up for Jan 1. If I sign up prior then I have to go through underwriting and husband with all his preexisting conditions might be difficult to push through. But come Jan 1 it will get approved automatically.

I told husband to contact his Doctors to see if they take that health insurance. I'll check to see if the pediatrician takes it. I feel much relieved.

Use Internet Explorer or Chrome. Yes, babies need health insurance, but your rate is super high. See if the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) can do better.

I would be checking into other health insurance companies before I would fork over 3k per month. Yowza, that is high.

Insurance companies are raising the rates now, because after Obamacare is implemented they will not be allowed to have these massive increases (supposedly). And yes, babies need health care. What if your baby develops jaundice (the most common problem to go wrong) in the first 24 hours and needs to go into neonatal intensive care under bili lights? That happened with my first child. 5 days in NICU would not have been cheap on our dime. And there are all kinds of things in a similar vein that can happen. Vaccines are also not cheap out of pocket. Plus there are a ton of well baby checks in the first year of life. I would not risk not having the baby have insurance. Definitely look into other insurance, though.

Definitely shop around. A cheaper or different insurance plan is certainly better than no insurance.

For reference, we pay $900/month for our entire family (A+ insurance, but with a $3,000 annual deductible/out-of-pocket). We can't afford the more "full coverage" plans, but this is more than ample for our needs. When we got the insurance several years ago we *never* went to the Doctor. Since then we have had several emergency room visits, major health problems, and surgeries. I was avoiding more "catastrophic type insurance" just due to fear of something as simple as a car accident. I think my employer's insurance has some like ridiculous $20,000 deductible. We'd be bankrupt with our run of luck in recent years. But, just to say there is plenty of "in between" insurance. You don't have to have a Cadillac plan, and you don't have to go without insurance. Lots of options in between.

P.S. In our state there is also free health insurance for kids of low income families. For reference, $75k income is considered "low income" in our region. Since you don't have a traditional salary right now, you may want to look into any lower income type of options.

    Definitely shop around.

If you are Costco members, be sure to include them on your list of places to comparison-shop for health insurance. http://www.costcoquote.com

Its good to know you found another option. I wonder if you can get that quote in writing...seems a little weird that you can't get that rate now, but you can in December.

I would look into peachcare since you are in GA and unemployed. It covers everything for the child and can be very cheap.

I'd shop around for sure. Look to get quotes from a health insurance broker. It costs you nothing and they do all the leg work.

Our insurance broker made a very handy spreadsheet so we could compare options. Save yourself a ton by NOT getting a $0 deductible policy. In most cases you spend more in premiums than you would just paying a *possible* deductible.

Also remember with ObamaCare all preventative care is 100% covered! Smile Your deductible would only need to be paid if something major happened.

Here is my post where I showed the spreadsheet of cost comparison.

Thank you guys! I am not done in my shopping for health care. I'll pick it up in December when a change needs to be made in my current plan. I appreciate all the advice, it helps me get a grasp on different options that are available.
